Robotic Dredging in a Remote Gold Mine in Papua New Guinea

Background

An unnamed gold mining client in Papua New Guinea faced a unique and challenging situation. The remote location of their asset, combined with the necessity to keep the process water tank in operation, required an innovative approach to dredging. Shutting down the tank was not an option, as it would have incurred significant costs and disrupted the Client’s operations. Dredge Robotics was tasked with mobilizing our advanced dredging technology to clean the tank while it remained in full service.

Mobilization and Setup

Given the remote location of the gold mine, the initial phase of the project involved the meticulous planning and mobilization of equipment to site. Our team coordinated the transportation of all necessary tools, personnel and robotic dredging equipment to site, with all equipment arriving safely and on schedule. Mobilisation to such a remote location on schedule is an fantastic example of our capability to professionally execute projects in difficult-to-reach locations.

Continuous Operation and Efficiency

The critical requirement for this project was to keep the process water tank in full service throughout the dredging operation. Our client could not take the tank offline without facing substantial financial losses. To address this, we deployed our state-of-the-art process tank dredging technology, specifically designed for such scenarios.

Our robotic dredging system was able to perform the necessary cleaning tasks while the asset remained online. Utilizing advanced sensors and control systems, our robots were able to perform navigation and obstacle avoidance, degrade the accumulated sediment and remove it from the tank with zero impact to production.
